Another possibility is to use a third-party editor like winedt, emacs, etc. That way you get informative highlighting and automatic indentation too. See

. Statsoft seem to have let the third party producers of editors specialize in the editing arena, while Statsoft provides a functional but not elaborate editor within Stata itself - worth checking out the alternatives.
