Sometimes I accidentelly save a changed dataset under the same name as theBut you can indeed make it impossible. The very top preference button in 'general preferences' reads 'Overwrite existing data when saving'. Unchecking this means that you get a warning before overwriting. The default behaviour for command-S or Ctrl-S is 'save, replace' in other applications, and Stata made the decision to allow this behaviour in Stata too (in version 7, I think) but to include an over-ride.
orignial dataset. This happens if I accidently hit "Ctrl S" in Stata, which
causes Stata to execute the command -save, replace-. I have once asked
StataCorp to make -save, replace- impossible, but (unfortunately) with no
success.
