As a further follow-up, the issue with Nick Cox's statsmat.hlp file
is interesting.

That file contains a line that has a single, unformatted space followed
by a carriage return, exactly at the point the viewing problem occurs.
When viewed remotely, this space causes the remainder of the file formatting
to be lost. If one removes the space and views the file remotely, it now
formats correctly. Viewed locally, the space has no effect.
I interpret this as a problem in the interfacing of the viewer to remotely
transferred files. StataCorp?
