Why don't you want to use the merge command? It is by far the most straightforward solution.

Hi,
Is there an easy way of keeping only the observations in one file (table) that are present in another file?
For example, if I have a file with date, names, height and weigth

date names height weight
1 Ann ... ...
2 Ann ... ...
.... ...
T Ann ... ...
1 Bob ... ...
2 Bob ... ...
...

and I want to keep only the observations for the names that are listed in a separate file, can I do this without using the merge command?
I would appreciate your help on this.
Thanks,
MA
