-ssc whatsnew- tells you what the latest additions are, and may identify routines that authors have not bothered to write Statalist about. Of course, for Kate, everything is new at this point, so perhaps her question is better interpreted as what addon routines do people like and recommend? That is a tough question to answer, as everyone has their personal quirks and needs. So long as Kate is condemned to using Stata 7 though, it is probably just a matter of time until she comes across some command that sounds perfect for her needs, only to find that it won't work unless you have Stata 8.
