We simply had a miscommunication. Depending on the operating system, paths can
use either a forward or back slash. I simply read 'foo\$bar.dta' as file
'$bar.dta' existing in folder 'foo'. In that case, 'foo\\\$bar.dta' would be
correct. If you are talking about a file named 'foo$bar.dta', your solution of
'foo\$bar.dta' is correct. Sorry for the confusion.
