That appears to work. I did search the help files, downloaded the latest
version of -hotdeck- from SSC, but somehow I got lost in the syntax of the
code. I also had trouble understanding how it was storing the imputed values
and how to retrieve them. Thanks again.

I think you are drawing y2a values from observations that match on y1, of
which there are none. Leave off the by() option.
