Incidentally, `=char(36)' doesn't seem to help in any special way. This gets mapped to $ and then eaten when next parsed as part of text, so it's no smarter than \$. As is probably clear, putting a space after "$" e.g. "$ US" solves the problem, at the expense of creating another problem.
