You might try saving it on the first computer using the ", old" option.

This is probably a longshot, but is is possible that the file was saved
using Stata/SE on the first computer and that the second computer is
running intercooled?

Subject: st: dta file not stata format
i am trying to open a stata 7 dataset using stata 7 on another computer
and am
repeatedly getting error message r(610) "file ___.dta not stata format."
I
have gotten a similar message before when trying to open a stata 8 data
in
stata 7 and just had to save the data down a version. but this cannot
be the
problem this time, as the computer on which i originally saved the
dataset is
running the same version of stata...
have tried the manuals and FAQs, but no luck.
any thoughts/advice greatly appreciated. many thanks.
