I'd nominate

because, with one word (i.e., simple) it allows users to easily and
quickly stay abreast of the latest developments, and thus is a fundamental
(i.e., deep) aspect of the continued evolution of all the other commands.
But, maybe this isn't stataish enough. I'm not sure. I haven't found any
other stat package that I can type update in and get everything
re-installedm, but maybe others have.
