Hi Richard,

It would be perfect if you can get Dell Precision Mobile Workstation
M60. It is fantastic for Data processing and GIS analysis, and
comparable to IBM Thinkpad 50p or T41p.

If you really want to buy Dell M60, I have some suggestions:

1. Processor: PM 1.6 or 1.7GHz
2. Monitor: WSXGA display is enough, you don't need to buy WUXGA one.
pls say money for buying more RAM 3.As David recommended, you should
invest on memory. 1GB DDR is good for you.

4. You may need a fast HDD, Dell M60 offers 60GB HH (7200rmp).

5. File system: I prefer NTFS rather than FAT32

I need to buy a new computer. The only times when speed ends up
mattering is when I use STATA and merge very large datasets, use GLAMM,
or use mfx. I was looking at the Dell Precision Workstation, and I saw
a very large set of options in terms of processors, hard drives, and so
on, and I have no idea what options matter given the tasks that I listed
above and which do not. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks. Richard
