-surface- is a user-written program by Adrian Mander. 

I think that in some circsumstances -surface- tries to 
use a matrix -xlines- before it has been created. 

I've a dim memory that this is because your data 
don't satisfy certain assumptions that it makes. 

Adrian is a member of this list, or at least was very 
recently, so he should be able to comment further.
