I looked at this and got nowhere. 

I don't think there are any handles for you to do this. 

In essence -dotplot- assumes that its practice of separating 
into different displays by groups or variables is enough. 

A quick and dirty do-it-yourself might be 

separate mpg, by(rep78) short 
scatter mpg? rep78, ms(Oh Dh Sh Th O) mcolor(red blue pink green brown)
