The short answer is Not much.
In particular, Stata cannot claim to be
a GIS.
However, there are several very interesting
user contributions in the field of spatial
statistics, and even mapping, some not
fully in the public domain. Also, I
suspect that spatial statistics will
be a growth area for Stata in the medium
term, partly because people who like Stata
will want to do spatial statistics within it.
My guess is that add-ons to R give it a clear
edge at present.
