When saving your file, you can also select "all file" when asked for the type of files. Save your file as yourfile.ado and it should be ok.
Remember placing you ado file in the right directory.

You said the icon is different from official ado files. This
indicates that the file was saved as filename.ado.txt, not
filename.ado. In the Windows Explorer, go to Tools - Folder Options -
View and uncheck "Hide extension for known file types." That should
reveal the .txt part and you can then delete it.
