difficult to say one way or the other if you have not used statistical 
packages. i have used statistica, arcus, spss and stata, roughly in that 
chronological order over the past 6 years. i spent longest using statistica 
and spss, but since 2000 i have used stata. i spent longest learning stata 
(v7 - because it was interactive command driven rather than point and click) 
but now, i would not go back to statistica or arcus or spss. when stata was 
v7, i sometimes used spss for graphics but with much improved graphics in 
stata v8, i am quite contented now with this one package, which is also 
point and click.

i think most package allows you to download a trial version - give it a go 
and see what would suit your needs. i do not know about r, sas, prism, 
statdirect or others.
