Stata 8.1 and Mac OS X Panther
------------------------------
Stata 8.2 is now available as of October 28, 2003. However, Stata 8.1 for the
Macintosh could fail to properly perform an -update swap- to this version when
run in Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther). There should be no problems with -update
swap- when using previous versions of OS X. You can tell that -update swap-
has failed if after you execute the command, Stata exits but the latest update
does not automatically launch itself.
If you have not already updated to Panther, update Stata before you do.
If you have already updated to Panther and have or will update from Stata 8.1
to Stata 8.2, -update swap- may fail for you so you'll have to do the
following:
- Open your Stata folder.
- Trash the Stata application that has "-old" appended to the filename
(Stata-old, StataSE-old, or smStata-old).
- Open the "STATANEW" folder contained within your Stata folder and drag the
Stata application contained within that folder to your Stata folder. You
may then trash the "STATANEW" folder if you wish.
We have corrected the -update swap- problem with Stata 8.1 and Panther and it
will still be available on our website due to reasons I'll touch upon in the
next section.
If you have not upgraded to Panther, run, don't walk, and buy a copy. It is
well worth it.
Reinstalling Stata from a CD
----------------------------
If you should ever find the need to reinstall Stata from your CD, you may have
to update twice. We changed the application format for Stata for the
Macintosh beginning with Stata 8.2 which earlier versions of Stata 8 do not
know how to update to. The last version of Stata 8.1 understands this new
format so you'll have to update to that version before you can update to Stata
8.2 and beyond. It's really simple and only requires you to:
. update executable
. update swap
Stata 8.1 launches
. update executable
. update swap
Stata 8.2 (or newer) launches.
Stata for Macintosh and the G5
------------------------------
We've received many inquiries as to if and when we will provide support for
the G5 and/or offer a 64-bit version of Stata. The simple answer is when the
tools are available for us to do so.
Our developer tools do not currently offer optimization support for the G5.
We have however investigated Apple's developer tools and saw little to no
gains when optimizing for the G5. Stata already runs quite quickly due to
the faster processing speed of the G5 and its two floating-point units.
A 64-bit version will be forthcoming as soon as our developer tools allow us
to produce one.
