Handling a multicategorical variable seamlessly in either case would 
seem just as desirable.

Just noting another wanted improvement. If you don't ask you don't get.

The fact that many rely on desmat and its authors generous efforts 
means it should have been duplicated by Stata or incorporated as an 
official command by now.
