Thanks Ben,
I got an error message when I did your suggestion (before I even
send
the question to the list). However, now that I retried your
suggestion, and looked carefully at the error message I understood
that it was not the command in itself that was wrong, and which let me
to believe that renpfix could not "remove" prefixes just replace them.
It is that STATA does not want any variable to start with a number!
