Thank you to Ted and Alan for their replies. Alan was spot on, I found 'invnorm' and read more about it using help invnorm in Stata.

Alan, this expression was part of the equation for working out sample size for comparative studies in medical testing. I located Z the old fashion way by looking up textbook table but since I am a Stata user, thought I should learn how to do it in Stata.

Cheers,
bw

bw - I think what you mean is ((invnorm(0.9) + invnorm(0.975))/log(1.2))^2

but what is this supposed to give you?
