Sorry, I forgot to mention that I would like to thank Nick Cox for writing
the -hplot- package (also downloadable from SSC), which is where I found a
lot of the ideas for -ingap-. (And which used to be my preferred way of
presenting to the world the confidence intervals out of which I make my
living as a statistician, before I had access to Stata 8 graphics. I would
still recommend it to any Stata 5 or Stata 6 users out there.)

Thanks to Kit Baum, there is now a new package -ingap- available for
download on SSC. Type -ssc desc ingap- to find out more (or see below).
The -ingap- package does everything that was done by my existing -bygap-
package (also downloadable from SSC), and more. It therefore supersedes

ingap: Insert gap observations into a data set before output by listtex
DESCRIPTION/AUTHOR(S)
ingap inserts gap and/or heading observations into a data set
before the
data set is output by the listtex package (downloadable from SSC),
which
outputs variables to table rows which the user can insert into a
TeX, LaTeX,
HTML or Microsoft Word table. ingap inserts observation next to
(before or
after) each of a list of observations specified by the user. The user
specifies a list of integers, and ingap inserts gap observations
next to
the observations in the corresponding positions in the data set, or
in the
corresponding positions in each by-group if by-variables are specified.
ingap assumes that the data set in memory has up to 3 classes of
variables.
These are the by-variables which define by-groups representing the
pages of
the table, a row label variable containing the row labels in the
left margin
of the table, and the remaining variables, which may form the
entries in the
table rows. A gap observation inserted by ingap has the same values
for the
by-variables as the observation next to which it was inserted, a
row label
value specified by the user, and missing values (or possibly column
headings)
in the remaining variables. ingap may also create an additional binary
variable, identifying which observations are gap observations. The
user may
output the data set using listtex, or may alternatively create a
plot for
immediate impact, using Stata graphics together with the sencode
package
(also downloadable from SSC),
