Thanks to the very kind services of Kit Baum, there is now a new version of
my -bygap- package downloadable from SSC. In Stata, type -ssc desc bygap-
to find out more.
The -bygap- package is part of my suite of programs for making Stata
results publication-friendly, and is often used with -outsheet- or with
-listtex- (downloadable from SSC) to create tables for export to Microsoft
Word, TeX, LaTeX or HTML. -bygap- inserts a gap observation at the start of
each of a set of by-groups, or at the start of the data set if no by-list
is specified. This gap observation has the same by-variable values as the
rest of the by-group, and the other variables are set (by default) to
missing, allowing the user to fill them in if s/he wishes to do so. The new
version has a -rstring- option, allowing the user to replace the values of
string variables in the gap observations with the variable names and/or
labels, so the user can create tables with title lines. To convert numeric
variables to string variables, the user can use the official Stata -string-
function, or alternatively the -tostring- package, written by Nick Cox and
Jeremy Wernow and downloadable from SSC. Converting numeric variables to
string variables before outputting them to publishable tables is often a
good idea, as it also allows the user to add parentheses and commas to
confidence limits, or even to add stars to P-values (if the statistical
referee doesn't object).
Best wishes
Roger
