st: gridlines for some values of x and ticks for other values of x

Hello, I am trying to figure out how to put gridline for only some of the x values.
If I do
scatter y x, xlab(1969 1979 1987 1989 1996 1999, grid) 
it puts grid lines for all values of x, while I would like ticks for some values of x and grid lines for other values of x.
Any suggestions?
