Nick
You're quite right - I had been using the *var suffix which does put the
output into alphabetical rather than file order. Apologies for confusion and
thanks again for your help - problem solved.

Subject: st: Order of variables in -ci-
I'm not sure what the problem is; -ci- returns its output with the
variables ordered as I specify in the command, in both v7 an v8:
. ci var3 var4 var1 var6 , binomial
-- Binomial Exact
--
Variable | Obs Mean Std. Err. [95% Conf.
Interval]
-------------+----------------------------------------------------------
---
var3 | 10 .4 .1549193 .1215576
.7376099
var4 | 10 .5 .1581139 .1870728
.8129272
var1 | 10 .7 .1449138 .3475647
.9332581
var6 | 10 .2 .1264911 .0252075
