Tar files have been a standard tape archive format for many years. As such,
they are not compressed in any way, by default. A tar file of this nature is
usually larger than the sum of sizes of all included files because it contains
organizational information about each file. Had these files been compressed,
they would bear a name such as allSVYfiles.tgz or allSVYfiles.tar.Z.
The tar files themselves were not compressed because some applications on other
platforms have problems uncompressing them.
