Laurel,

if I understand you correctly, your alpha test is insignificant, which 
means you cannot reject the null of equidispersion. however, have 
you used the robust option or pweights? in that case you shouldn't 
relay on the LR test as the regression does not produce the `true' 
log likelihood (there is some stuff on the web concerning this point, 
I just can't remember where). alternatively, you could perform a 
simple t-test and see whether the result remains the same.
