This involved a bug with -update swap- when Stata was installed in a path
with a space in the name, such as "Program Files", and only occurred under
Windows versions of Stata.
This has been fixed in the 23Jan2003 update, however, upgrading to this
version requires a manual rename (as was done under Stata7). Roger also
pointed this out.
If you experience this bug with -update swap-, simply download the new
executable via Stata, and instead of running -update swap-, manually
rename your wstata.bin (wsmstata.bin/wsestata.bin depending on flavor) to
replace your existing wstata.exe (wsmstata.exe/wsestata.exe depending on
flavor).
Once you have manually renamed and are running the 23Jan2003 version, you
can use -update swap- for any subsequent updates.
