A correction to my previous communication. The -infix- commands I included should, of course, specify that the input variables are strings. They should read

infix str sect1 1-80 str sect2 81-160 str sect3 161-240 using foobar.ado,clear

in the case of the real-world version suggested frst, and

infix str sect1 1-80 str sect2 81-160 str sect3 161-240 using foobar.ado,clear notrim

in the case of the hypothetical dream version proposed later.

Apologies for any confusion caused.
