Why does Stata crash when I open the Data Editor in Stata for Macintosh?

Title Stata crashes when opening Data Editor on Macintosh
Author Chinh Nguyen, StataCorp
Date September 2007

Stata may crash on Macintosh computers when the Data Editor is opened.

The reason for the crash is that Stata does not support multibyte characters at this time. If your language settings are set to a language such as Japanese or Korean, which use multibyte characters, Stata will crash when the Data Editor is invoked. To avoid this problem, open System Preferences from the Dock, click the International icon, make sure the Language tab is selected, and then set the language to English.
