Re question 2, please try
   listtex name if sample32_absence=3D=3D1, rstyle(tabdelim)
headlines("sample32_absence") appendto(table_countries)

(using is exclusive of appendto)

The command in q1 seems fine to me, I don't know why you didn't get
the result you wanted.
